An illustrated talk by Valerie Hills 'Mighty Oaks from little acorns grow - 50 Years of Scouting in Woodham Ferrers'

Wednesday 04 November 2015
20:00 to 22:00

Scouting in Woodham reaches a significant milestone in 2015 as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Many leaders and helpers have made highly valued contributions during those fifty years but it is likely that Valerie and Bob Hills will be remembered with particularly fond affection by many in the Woodham area because it was this dedicated couple who were inspired to establish the village’s 1st Scout Group in 1965 and were instrumental in running it for the first decade. Indeed such was their dedication to the cause that the rear garden of their home in the village of Woodham Ferrers became the site of the Group’s first scout hut...

The South Woodham Ferrers Local History Society is pleased to be able to arrange a small contribution to this milestone year and is delighted to be welcoming Valerie Hills herself to give an illustrated talk ‘Mighty Oaks from little acorns grow – 50 years of Scouting in Woodham Ferrers’ at the Society’s next meeting. Bob announced his retirement as Group Leader, on doctor’s orders, at the group’s Tenth AGM in October 1975 but those first critical formative years had been in good hands. Be prepared... for an evening that it is likely to be full of entertaining stories and memories – particularly from those early days.

Visitors will be very welcome (admission £3) and no booking is necessary. Alternatively you may join the Society on the evening for £12 per annum which gives admission to all the Society’s meetings.
