An illustrated talk by John Frankland which traces the history of motor sport in Essex from the first attempt to organise a speed trial in the county in 1899 and encompasses interwar public road speed events at places like Westcliff and Thundersley.  Postwar events centred on usually safer airfield venues foremost amongst which was Boreham where a Formula 1 race won by Ferrari was held in 1952
